Independent India held its first General Elections in 1952 -- the largest democratic exercise the world had ever witnessed -- so it is ironic that that year’s Indian Derby winner was called Martial Law! A further bizarre twist was that Martial Law was owned by H. R. H. Maharani Sita Devi Gaekwar of Baroda, the wife of H. R. H. Maharaja Pratapsinh Gaekwar of Baroda, the breeder of the colt. Just the previous year, the Maharaja had been deposed by the Government of India. The couple was then living in ‘exile’ in England.
The 1952 Indian Derby was contested by the first crop born in partitioned India. It not only meant that it was smaller in size -- large chunks for prime horse breeding areas had gone to Pakistan -- but also that it was poorer quality for the produce of Renala Stud, undoubtedly the leading nursery of undivided India, was no longer available...
