Nana Ragunath, a well established trainer in Western India, passed away last month in Calcutta after suffering a heart attack. Nana was quintessentially from a prominent racing family, as his father was celebrated jockey K. Ragunath who won the Indian Triple Crown astride Red Rufus in the year 1966. The Ragunath family hailed from Pune and their foray into horseracing is accredited to the patronage of H. R. H. the Maharaja of Gwalior, for whom K. Ragunath rode.

was even more fascinated by the sport. From the early age of 4, he used to accompany his father and younger brother (trainer Sanjay Kolse) to the track, and watch and absorb all that he could about horse racing. When his father retired from the saddle, and started his second innings as trainer, the young Nana Ragunath was a permanent fixture in the yard. Naturally, almost like a passing of the baton, he took up a trainer’s license in the early 80’s.
