"Eclipse" April 1, 1764 to February 26, 1789 - a descendant of the Godolphin Arabian and was undefeated in his entire career. He was by "Marske" out of "Spilletta". He was the property of Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and born at the Grandborn Lord's Stud. He was named after the solar eclipse of April 1,1764 (his day of birth).
His first race was at age 5 on 3rd May 1769 at Epsom. Jockey Oakley, was the only one to be able to handle Eclipse's temperament and the official judgment of the Race was "Eclipse first and the rest nowhere". He was retired to stud after his racing career of 18 out of 18 wins and sired 344 foals.
Eclipse died at age 24 on 26th February 1789 of colic. His skeleton is preserved in the Jockey Club Museum in New Market.
The Eclipse Stakes has been named after him and is one of England's premier races.
